18/02/2025 - Now Listening - heart of android

i just finished up listening to heart of android by Camellia, 10/10 album with a huge range and great progression of tracks across the album and alot of super unique sounds. Listening to the whole thing in a single sitting, it felt like a super natural progression despite the range of styles and energy levels across so many of the songs on it. pretty much every track on there has a solid argument for being the "best" track on the album

highlights:

  1. Embracing Intelligences: last track of the album but the first one i listened to, found the album through someone linking it on an upload of Camellia's track "Small Steps" from DANCERUSH. it's definitely the most chill track of the album and it's a great outro, super upbeat and happy with a really nice percussion-y synth that pushes most of the chorus
  2. Upload Your Mind :: Download My Soul: probably the most aggressive track of the whole album, really bass-y, has some cool scream-y vocals in the back that are super unique in the album. not so massive on the acoustic breaks in the middle of the track though, it really peaks about half way through and at the very end.
  3. New Era: probably my favourite. plays around with some super cool cut up samples and the high-pitched synth throughout the track sounds incredible, both as a backing element behind other stuff and by itself.
  4. Together forever, my lovely lovely video game cartridges: really cute chiptune stuff. super cozy
  5. FM Synthesis Experiment: experiments with some super weird synths that are tuned to sound very slightly out of tune, but it totally works. sounds really really unique with some really cool percussion and vocal samples as well
  6. Heart of Android : Even If It's Only By Mechanism: really heavily utilises some cool robotic vocal samples to the point of them really being a main instrument in the track. super upbeat and cute too. definitely fits more with the album cover art than any other track on the album
  7. Arcology on Permafrost: really sick swing piano, also uses the "let's bring the house down" sample from crazy shuffle, which is cool

that's not everything (honestly very hard to find unique things to say about every track without repeating myself, music reviews r hard :v). but any track i haven't mentioned is still super great, just these were definitely the big standouts in terms of sounding super unique.

may pick up a CD of this at some point, since japanese artists still make CDs for most of their releases which is really nice (though unfortunately they don't generally get international releases :c)

this is pretty much the first EDM album i've listened to start to finish i think. gotten into quite a few more electronic artists from rhythm games recently and this has been a great introduction to some non-rhythm-game music by these producers. definitely would recommend giving it a listen!
